What counts as a referral

You get a link with your code in it:

https://skomi.com/?a=ANNA

Anyone who arrives through it is remembered for 60 days. They can read a review on Tuesday, close the tab, and sign up the following week. It still counts. The code survives the walk from the marketing site to the sign-up page, which are different addresses.

A referral is created when an account is created, and only then. After that it is permanent: nobody can be re-attributed to a different affiliate later, and arriving through somebody else's link afterwards changes nothing. That is deliberate. Re-attribution after the fact is how two affiliates end up billing for the same customer.

Two things do not create a referral:

  • Your own account. You cannot refer yourself.
  • Signing in. Only a new account counts, however the person arrived.

How commission is worked out

Every time a referred customer is charged, your share is recorded against that payment.

It is taken from the amount before tax. Sales tax and VAT are collected on the customer's behalf and handed straight to the tax authority. That money is never Skomi's, so it is nobody's commission. Any discount the customer used comes off first too, because commission follows what was actually paid.

What that means in practice, on a $62.00 charge that includes $12.00 of tax:

Charged to the customer $62.00
Tax within it −$12.00
Your rate is applied to $50.00

The number that matters is the $50.00. Whatever rate you are on is applied to the charge after tax and after any discount, never to the $62.00 the customer saw. That is the part people get wrong when they estimate what a referral is worth.

Monthly and annual charges can be agreed at different rates, because an annual sale pays twelve months up front and is worth more per signature. Which one applies is read from the period the charge actually covered, not from what the customer is nominally on.

How long it lasts

That depends on the code you were given. A code can earn on the first payment only, across a fixed number of billing periods, or without a limit. Your own codes and their terms are listed on your affiliate page.

The count is per customer, not per code. "The first five payments" means five from each person you send, not five in total.

Retiring a code stops it taking new referrals. Customers it already brought in keep earning on the terms they were referred under.

What a refund does

If a referred customer is refunded, the commission on that payment comes back in proportion. Half a refund takes half the commission; a full refund takes all of it and the payment stops counting towards the code's limit, so their next payment earns in its place.

This happens automatically, and you can see it on your own page rather than finding out from a smaller payment. Each earning shows what it was and what came off it.

A chargeback works the same way. If one is later contested and won, the money comes back and so does the commission.

If a payment was refunded after we had already paid you for it, that amount is deducted from your next payout rather than requested back.

Getting paid

Earnings accrue as they happen. They are not paid automatically and they do not come off your own Skomi bill. They are sent to you separately.

  • In the currency they were earned in. Skomi never converts between currencies, so referrals paying in euros and referrals paying in dollars are two balances and two payments.
  • To wherever you tell us. Bank transfer or Wise, set on your affiliate page along with a floor below which you would rather we waited.
  • By hand, and recorded. Every payment to you is listed with its reference, so both sides can reconcile.

Keeping your payout details filled in is the single most useful thing you can do to be paid promptly. A balance with nowhere to send it is the commonest reason a payment run stalls.

Where to see all of it

Sign in and open Affiliate. It lists every code you hold with the link to share, every customer they brought in, and every payment you have earned on, filterable by code, by period, and by whether it has been paid yet. Your billing page carries a summary of the same figures.

Referred customers' email addresses are shown only partially. You are owed the figures; the rest is somebody else's account.

Getting a code

The programme is arranged directly rather than applied for. Send us a note through the contact form, telling us where your audience is and what you would put a link in front of.
